“Transforming words and thoughts into imagery is a powerful way of seeing where you are now and where you would like to be. Art gives us the ability to re-write our own life narrative rather than unconsciously absorbing that narrative from the people and culture around us. In a world that bombards us with imagery through social media and advertising creating our own imagery and choosing the story we tell ourselves can be a powerful medium for change.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is art therapy?

Art therapists are qualified mental health practitioners who use art, media and the creative process (drawing, writing, sculpting, drama, clay, sand, dance and movement) to facilitate the exploration of thoughts, emotions and experiences. (ANZACATA, 2024).

Art therapy is not an art class and requires no prior art-making experience. Art therapy emphasises the process over the outcome or completion of a finished ‘artwork’ - though you may choose to create one. Engaging with materials and expressive practices is a body-centred process which can reveal underlying patterns, limiting beliefs, insights, and connections, offering new perspectives and pathways for healing and self-understanding. It can support individuals navigating:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Illness and pain

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship breakdowns

  • Life transitions

Expressive arts therapy can also support emotional regulation, stress management, relaxation, and mindfulness. It can also provide meaningful assistance for those experiencing:

  • Substance use and recovery

  • Disordered eating and body image concerns

  • Internet addiction

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Learning differences

  • Identity exploration

What happens in a session?

You’ll be guided to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences through engaging with materials—such as paint, clay, or collage—if you choose to use them. There is no pressure to engage with specific materials; sessions can also involve journalling, poetry, movement, sand tray or other expressive modalities, as well as talk therapy. The focus is on creating a safe and supportive space for self-expression and personal insight, with guidance from a Masters qualified therapist tailored to your needs.
